Celebrating a Legacy: Mike Pohlman’s Retirement and a New Chapter for Pickering

At Pickering Firm, Inc., our story is one of growth, service, and a commitment to excellence—a story shaped by the dedication of countless individuals. Among them, Mike Pohlman, our CEO, has played a pivotal role. After more than 45 years with the firm, Mike will retire in June 2025, capping a career defined by determination, vision, and a genuine passion for both the work we do and the people who make it possible.

Mike joined Pickering in 1979, fresh out of Christian Brothers College (now Christian Brothers University) with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. “I came to Pickering as a wide-eyed engineering graduate—what I called a ‘Summa cum lucky,’” Mike recalled. “I didn’t have a clue what a career in consulting engineering would look like, but I was thrown into the frying pan and figured it out, thanks to some incredible mentors.”

Mike’s journey at Pickering began as an energy engineer, focusing on HVAC studies and retrofits. Over time, he transitioned into project management—a role he credits with shaping his approach to leadership. “Project management taught me how every piece of the puzzle fits together—from project financing to construction to handing over the keys,” he said. “It was daunting, but always doable because of the talented team around me.”

Leadership with a Vision

Influenced by his father, an engineer, and his brothers, Mike developed a leadership style rooted in collaboration, humility, and purpose. As CEO, Mike has led Pickering through transformative changes, including the corporate ownership transition to an employee-owned firm and the expansion into new markets. These achievements are matched only by his unwavering commitment to the firm’s culture. “One of my proudest accomplishments is refocusing our mission back to Service and Good Work,” he shared. “It’s a mindset that drives everything we do.”

Under his leadership, Pickering has grown, not just in revenue but in the opportunities created for employees at every level. “This firm is my second home and family,” Mike said. “I’ve grown here, learned here, and had the privilege of seeing so many others do the same.”

Life Beyond Work

Outside the office, Mike’s approach to life reflects the same values that have defined his career—family, connection, and a passion for making meaningful moments. Weekends often find him on the golf course, relishing both the game and the camaraderie it brings.  An East Memphis resident, Mike treasures time with his wife, Catherine, their four children, and their six grandchildren. Whether swapping stories over a meal or cheering on his favorite Memphis basketball team, Mike treasures the simple joys of togetherness. “I’ve always found that the best moments are shared with the people you care about most,” he said.

Looking to the Future

As we celebrate Mike’s incredible career, we’re also excited to usher in a new chapter under the leadership of Bob Pitts, who will assume the role of CEO, and Mike Foster, who will step into the role of President, both effective July 1, 2025. Their leadership reflects the continuity and vision that Mike has worked tirelessly to instill.

“Mike has been more than a leader—he’s been a friend and mentor,” Bob said. “We’re grateful for his legacy, and we’re ready to carry it forward.”

A Note to Mike
