Coffee Creek and undeveloped areas bordering the creek were in poor condition as a result of illegal dumping, debris from Hurricane Katrina, vandalism and the proliferation of invasive/undesirable vegetative species. This restoration project enhances Coffee Creek by stabilizing eroded stream banks and channel’s natural flows, eliminating invasive/undesirable vegetative species and improving public access (including ADA access) to recreational facilities. The project provides paved, gravel and boardwalk recreational trails, improving the already existing Clower-Thorton Nature Area and construction of a new Pavilion. The project also highlights natural features and points of interest such as aquatic and wetland habitats, native plants and trees and potential archaeological sites with educational placards along the trails.

In compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Pickering conducted an Environmental Assessment for proposed drainage improvements and recreational trail enhancements along an approximate one mile stretch of Coffee Creek. The environmental assessment examined potential effects and impacts of the project on the environment. Wetland Delineation studies determined the amount of wetlands to be impacted and mitigation measures required, and a Threatened and Endangered Species Survey to identify species of concern and their habitats.
