Roadway Design

Pickering was selected by Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) to widen a 5.5-mile section of Interstate 40 between Highland Street interchange (Exit 82A/82B) to east of U.S. Highway 70 interchange. Additionally, the project includes interchanges at Campbell Street (Exit 83) and Christmasville Road/Dr. F.E. Wright Drive (Exit 85) and SR 1/US 70 (Exit 87).

In order to properly and completely identify all existing conditions, field surveys were performed to supplement the aerial survey which was provided by others. These included span bridge detail surveys, hydraulic bridge detail and valley surveys and railroad surveys. In our experience, a quality design cannot happen without a complete and accurate field survey.

Roadway designs included widening to the median side, interchange ramp modifications, lighting and an all new median storm drainage system. Other designs were incorporated to accommodate an interstate widening in an urban environment, including the preliminary design for noise and retaining walls in select areas of the project as well as all new ROW fencing. Additionally, the project required extensive and very complex traffic control plans to maintain traffic while removing and replacing five bridges (two bridges on I-40 over Norfolk Southern railroad crossings, one bridge on Campbell St. over I-40, one bridge on Henderson Rd. over I-40 and one bridge on Watson Rd. over I-40).

Median crossovers, road closures and phased construction methods were all utilized to maintain traffic through all phases of construction.
